OTSEGO — The Wolverine Conference “played two” last week at Lake Doster Golf Club in Plainwell.

The annual doubleheader was hosted by Plainwell and Otsego.

League-leading Sturgis swept the jamborees as the Trojans shot 211 and 200 respectively on the front and back nines.

Dowagiac finished sixth in the first jamboree after shooting a 237, but rebounded to finish third in the second jamboree with a 212.

Sturgis currently leads the overall standings with 32 points, while Plainwell is second with 26 and the Chieftains third with 20.

Three Rivers and Otsego round out the top five with 19 and 16 points.

Heidi Hines of Three Rivers was the medalist in the first jamboree after shooting a round of 44.

Hines and Dowagiac’s Rebecca Franklin tied for medalist honors in the second jamboree after shooting 43.

Dowagiac’s Greta Whitaker just missed out on finishing in the top 10 of the first jamboree, but finished seventh in the second jamboree. Whitaker shot 53 and 50 respectively.

Freshmen football

DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac freshman football team opened the home portion of its schedule with a 42-7 victory over visiting Three Rivers last Thursday.

Scoring for the Chieftains were Keshawn Russell (one rushing, one passing), Andrew Flores, Elijah Clark, Kamryn Johnson and Jordan Hardin.

JV football

The Chieftain JV football team improved to 2-0 with a 38-6 victory over Three Rivers at Chris Taylor-Alumni Field last Wednesday.

Brendan Lazano had a touchdown and a pair of 2-point conversions — one running and one passing to Ben Owen.

David Collier had a 50-yard punt return, while Denny White, Lavarius Davis and Zane McPhail also scored.

Budda Barnes had a 2-point conversion.

Ryan Roach and Terance Price led the Dowagiac defense, which got an interception from Collier.

Freshman volleyball

THREE RIVERS — The Dowagiac freshman volleyball team was defeated by host Three Rivers 25-13 and 25-18 last Wednesday.

“The team is showing huge improvements every practice and every game,” said Dowagiac coach Danielle Coster. “They work hard. I’m extremely impressed by their drive. It’s going to ‘click’ soon, and when it does, they are going to be a tough team to beat at their level.”

Taylor Wimberly led the Chieftains with eight kills and six digs, while Keyanah Starrett had five kills, four digs and two blocks.

Dowagiac also got 12 digs, six assists, four kills and eight service points from Madyson Groth. Khloie Goins added eight points, 10 digs and four kills.
