Medications play an important part in our health.

Do you know the names and strengths of medications you take on a regular basis? How about any over the counter and herbal medications you take? If you were unconscious, and not able to communicate about your medications, or allergies to medications, would anyone else be able to communicate this important information to an emergency physician on your behalf?

Keeping an up-to-date list of all of your medications in your purse or wallet is an easy way to keep track of what you take on a daily basis. It’s a great help for caregivers and family members who help take care of their parents.  Many brand name medications are also known by generic names, and physically the pills may not look anything alike. Describing a prescription medication as “a little round blue pill” is not an adequate description. Dosages are very important too, so writing down the exact dosage, as well as when you take it (morning, noon, dinner, bedtime) is very helpful to medical personnel.

Another reason your doctor needs to know about all the medications you’re taking is to avoid prescribing something that is contraindicated. Having a current list of your medications will assist your doctor in providing the very best care for you.

Medication cards are free at most doctors’ offices and hospitals.  Or stop in at the Cassopolis Family Clinic and ask for one.   The cards have a place for your physician’s name and phone number, and an emergency contact.  They’re small, and fit nicely in a plastic envelope which fits snugly in your wallet.
