Niles’ Kurt Poehlman claims conference title

KALAMAZOO - There was no doubt about who was the best team in the Big 16 Conference this season when it came to track.
Portage Central won both the boy's and girl's titles Wednesday afternoon at Kalamazoo Loy Norrix High School.
The Mustangs scored 128.5 points to easily outdistance runner-up Kalamazoo Central in the boy's portion of the meet.
Coldwater took third with 59 points, while Portage Northern and Battle Creek Lakeview were fourth and fifth with 55 and 43 points respectively.
Niles finished ninth with 37 points, while Dowagiac was 16th with 13 points.
The Lady Mustangs scored 78 points to defeat Battle Creek Lakeview, which finished with 63 points.
St. Joseph took third with 62.33 points, while Portage Northern was fourth with 58 points and Marshall fifth with 57.5 points.
Niles finished ninth with 42 points and Dowagiac 13th with 20 points.
The Vikings had one conference champion as Kurt Poehlman captured the high jump with a height of 6-feet-4.
Also placing for Niles were David Davis in the pole vault (11-0), Isaiah Glaze in the 100-meters (11.64, Craig Rumpf in the 400-meters (51.18), Andy Wuthnow in the 800-meters (2:02.9) and the Vikings' 3,200- and 1,600-meter relays teams. Niles placed fourth and third respectively with times of 8:23.69 and 3:30.31.
Niles' Ashley Roland finished second in the discus with a toss of 103-0, while Ashley Austin was third in the shot put with a throw of 35-4. Austin was also seventh in the discus with a throw of 96-4.
Kaylynn Stephensen was third in the long jump with a leap of 16-4. She was also fifth in the 100-meters with a time of 13.36 and fifth in the 200-meters with a time of 27.17. Tasha Webster finished sixth in the 100-meters with a time of 13.48.
Nicole Horvath finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 18.05. Sam Brawley finished eighth in the 1,600-meters with a time of 5:30.08 and sixth in the 3,200-meters with a clocking of 12:34.25, while Autumn Grayson was seventh in the 400-meters with a time of 1:04.08.
