NILES - The Niles Vikings track and field team will go for its third straight Big 16 West Division championship at home on Tuesday, May 9.
Already feeling the blade of the mighty Vikings were St. Joe, who lost 103-60, Lakeshore lost 106-57 and Benton Harbor lost 100-57, with only the Dowagiac Chieftains left on the schedule.
After last year, winning its second west title and first Regional championship in over 20 years, coach Todd was a bit worried about loosing the bulk of his sprinters. Niles has once again risen to the challenge, with its new crew of sprinters. Lead by returning state qualifier Isaiah Glaze and the area's top 400 meter runner C.J. Rumpf.
Other relay specialist are Lewis Delmuro, an all around sprinter/hurdler and Ricky Phillips, the new speed crew, is doing just fine.
Although Niles lost its top distance runner in Logan Todd, they are returning an extremely talented crew of three 800 meter runners already running in the 2:02's.
Led by senior Andy Wuthnow along with Nick Shuck, Dan Geiger and Stephen Scally, these guys make up a dynamic 3200 Relay.
The field events are also looking very good with returning All-State high jumper Kurt Poehlman, who had a personal indoors best of 6-feet-8.
Paul Depoy and Kenyon Ellison are looking good in the shot put and Discus.
Rounding out the field events are Quinten Murphy in the long lump and David Davis in the pole vault.
