MARSHALL – A five-goal first half was all Marshall needed to defeat visiting Niles in the opening round of the Big 16 Conference Silver Division Soccer Tournament Tuesday night.
Cicone Palmore scored the lone goal for the Vikings with 27:14 showing on the second half clock.
Marshall outshot Niles 17-6.
“It has been years since I have seen a game like this at Niles,” Niles coach Jerry Holtgren said. “We had been playing pretty well recently and tonight we were controlled from the start. We obviously weren’t ready to play; Marshall scored three goals in the first 12 minutes and never let up.  They had an extremely fast player that we were unable to adjust to who scored four of their goals.  They hit over half of their shot attempts and many of them were hard shots from outside of 18 yards. It was a frustrating game that we would rather forget.”
The Vikings will host Battle Creek Central at 5:45 tonight.
