There are many ways to support your local library. Donating used books is one. If your spring cleaning includes sorting through boxes, cases and stacks of books, you may want to consider donating some of your books to the Niles District Library. The library accepts all donations, but asks that Reader's Digest Condensed books and magazines not be donated.
Following several very successful book sales and give-a-way events, our book stock is at a five-year low. Donated books are sold during our spring and fall book sales. The proceeds from these sales are the main source of income for the Friends of Niles District Library.
Another way to help support the library is through volunteering. The Friends are always looking for volunteers to help organize the books which are stored in the library's basement. To join the Friends and become a volunteer, simply stop by the library and ask for a form at the front desk.You may also want to speak to Darlene Jackson, our children's librarian or Nancy Studebaker, the library director, about volunteer opportunities.
Both the library and the Friends also accept cash donations. Donations to the library or the Friends are tax deductible. Michigan law permits individuals and businesses to reduce Michigan Income Tax or Michigan Single Business Tax, by a credit of 50 percent of the cash amount contributed to public libraries. The tax credits are subject to limitations.
A popular way to support the library is through the establishment of a memorial fund for a loved one. Memorial funds provide a lasting tribute to a friend or family member. Funds are usually used to purchase books.Family members may request that funds be used to purchase books on a subject with special meaning to their loved one. Book plates are also available.
