Gorgeous spring weather expected to continue this weekend should provide the perfect backdrop for teams from throughout southwestern lower Michigan and northern Indiana competing in a variety of local sports tournaments.
Brandywine's softball team is off to a good start.
The Lady Bobcats hope to continue their winning ways across the border at the South Bend, Ind., Adams Tournament.
Play is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.
Brandywine and Buchanan track teams both take part in Saturday's Watervliet Relays, also set to begin at 9.
Chieftain thinclads will be traveling to Paw Paw for an invitational. That too, begins at 9 a.m.
Closer to home, the Niles soccer team travels to Dowagiac and joins River Valley at the Dowagiac Early Bird Invitational Soccer Tournament. This round-robin affair begins at 10 a.m.
Also in Dowagiac, the Chieftains host one of the better softball tournaments in the state.
The Dowagiac Invitational, which begins at 10:30 a.m. on four different fields, features eight teams from Michigan and Indiana.
Among teams traveling to Dowagiac are Kalamazoo Christian, which finished last season 28-11. The Lady Comets have six state championships to their credit.
Andrean, from Merrillville, reached the Indiana Final Four last year at 32-3.
Andrean spent much of last season ranked No. 1 in Class 3A.
Also coming to Dowagiac is Jenison, 29-2 last year.
Jenison finished 1999 as state runner-up and won district and regional titles last season.
If tennis is your game, head to Edwardsburg, where the Eddies host Dowagiac and Coldwater in an invitational tournament which begins at 9 a.m.
There is no better way to spend a beautiful spring day than to get outside and see some high school sports.
It doesn't cost much and you can witness athletics in its purest form.
Make that short jaunt to South Bend, Dowagiac or Edwardsburg on Saturday and catch the action.
You won't be sorry.
