NILES CHARTER TOWNSHIP — A local school district hosted a meal Monday to show its gratitude to local veterans and recognize the sacrifices they have made.
Brandywine Community Schools hosted its second annual Veterans Day breakfast Monday at the Brandywine Athletic Community Center, 1700 Bell Rd.
“It’s always great to be able to offer something to people that have sacrificed so much and for all our freedoms and for everything they’ve done,” said Brandywine Middle/High School Principal Evan Winkler. “I can’t even fathom doing what they did going away from family. It’s hard enough for me to move an hour away from my family. Imagine going overseas or going across the state and moving every couple years and what they’ve seen and what they’ve had to deal with is just an amazing sacrifice. This is the least we can do. I wish we could even do more but it’s just nice that we can do this and honor them.”
Students from Brandywine Elementary welcomed veterans into the building with patriotic welcome signs and Merritt Elementary students led the Pledge of Allegiance. In addition to breakfast served by the district’s Food Services department, members of the Brandywine High School Band played the Armed Forces Medley and district staff were on hand to speak with and welcome Veterans.
