BERRIEN SPRINGS — The Dowagiac boys soccer team’s season came to a close Monday night against Hartford.

The Huskies shut down the Chieftains 6-0 in Division 3 district semifinal play Monday at Berrien Springs High School.

“I thought we came out a little slow,” said Dowagiac coach Joseph Pasternak. “We had talked about that and we talked about giving up backside goals, rebound goals, those types of things. We talked a lot about those and we gave up a few early ones and we were fighting from behind for a while.”

Hartford had 11 shots on goal compared to Dowagiac’s two. Goalkeeper Tyler Hannapel made 11 saves in net.

“Andreas had an off game today, but still played well, as did our center-back Mason Bressler and our goalkeeper Tyler Hannapel,” Pasternak said. “We made some minor mistakes which put us behind. We didn’t play our best today.”

The Chieftains finish the season with a 4-12-2 record. While sad to see the season come to an end, Pasternak was proud of his team’s effort this season.

“This was one of my first groups to actually bring up from freshman after taking over at varsity levels so to watch them grow as young men is always going to stay with me,” he said. “To really see how they’ve matured over the last couple years, it’s just been a pleasure to coach them and everything.”

The Chieftains will graduate nine seniors from their 16-player roster.

“We got some work to do next year, sure,” Pasternak said. “We were missing a few starters today that hopefully are coming back next year. We’re gonna be super young next year, which hopefully, we can start to build for the future.”
