Educators are perhaps the greatest population of unsung heroes in Berrien and Cass County. This school year, Leader Publications will publish a weekly spotlight featuring teachers and staff throughout the Dowagiac Union Schools district, giving the community a chance to get to know the hard-working individuals shaping their children’s lives.

Where did you attend college?

Western Michigan University – Go Broncos!

How many years have you been teaching?

How many years have you been with your current school? 23 – I have been at the Middle School all but five of those years.

Why did you decide to become a teacher?

Honestly, I always wanted to teach, but when I went to college I dabbled in psychology, business, and criminal justice before settling into Education. I was drawn to the creative side of designing engaging lessons and hoped to be a positive role model for students.

Outside of school, what do you enjoy doing for fun?

I love to travel, camp, spend time with my family, friends, and pets, read, and take walks. 

What is one thing your students may not know about you?

I love to go to concerts.

Who is your favorite fictional character and why?

Belle from Beauty and the Beast.  I feel the same way as she does about books!

When you were a student in the grade you teach, what were your favorite hobbies?

You would find me playing outside with my friends, riding bikes, and taking dance classes.

How would your coworkers describe your teaching style and personality?

I set high standards, have clear expectations and routines, a sense of humor, and good relationships with my students. 

Who is your biggest role model and why?

My parents are my greatest role models.  Despite their responsibilities, my parents are always there for our family when we need them. Their dedication to family has set the greatest example for me.

How has education changed in the last 10 years?

So much has changed.  Technology is more prevalent. Because of this, it is much easier for parents to stay up-to-date and aware of their student’s progress.

What is your best advice to parents to help their child continue to grow academically?

Start reading with your child early, encourage your child to read, and it is equally important to teach your child to advocate for themselves.

If my students learn one thing this year, I hope it is… to love to read, to be a good human, and that I want the best for them all.
