DOWAGIAC — A new business has opened its doors to provide community members with  tasty ways to combat the sun’s heat.

Jordan Anderson and Hector Rivas of Baker’s Rhapsody have opened their new ice cream shop, Slope Frozen Treats, at 231 S. Front St. after months of anticipation. While the store had its soft opening Monday, word of mouth quickly spread throughout the community, which was eager to try the frozen treats.

“It felt like a grand opening,” Anderson said. “As soon as the afternoon hit, it was just like lines out the door the whole day, so it was good.”

“The response has just been fantastic,” he added. “So many positive people, you love to see it. We’ve been working really hard on it, so it’s really great to get the doors open and actually start pushing our staff and, and getting things going. (Our staff is) doing such a great job, so we’re really stoked about that. It’s been great.”

Anderson and Rivas decided on Slope after brainstorming winter and cold-themed names. The ice cream shop – open from noon to 9 p.m. seven days a week during the summer months, offers treats with a Midwestern twist on classic items, including soft serve, floats, sundaes, slushes, shakes, malts and more.

“There are all sorts of different combinations and things you can play with, so that’s a lot of fun,” Anderson said. “It’s fun to have a larger staff of young creative people like this because they’re always coming up with new things too. It’s been a ton of fun to try and figure out all the ins and outs and the different sorts of flavor combinations we can have.”

Anderson said the community can look forward to tasty new additions to the menu in the future.

“I’m looking at doing some fun ice cream sandwiches and hopefully we can do waffle cone nachos and tacos and stuff like that,” he said. “A lot of fun things are in the pipeline.”
