NILES — A day 13 years in the making arrived for Niles High School seniors Thursday night.
178 seniors took the field at Vikings Stadium for the 162nd Niles High School commencement ceremony Thursday evening. Friends, family and community members gathered in the stands to see off the Class of 2024.
“Each of you embody our vision statement – ‘Dynamic learners, diverse opportunities, driven to succeed’ and succeed, you most definitely will,” said Principal Michelle Asmus. “You have your wings and we can’t wait to watch you fly. Your path may take you far, your path may keep you close but know that NHS and this community will always be a place for you to land because once an Niles Viking, always a Niles Viking.”
Three seniors – Charlene Aufie, Lorraine Holtgren and Talon Brawley – took to the podium as senior speakers addressing to give one last speech to their classmates, teachers and community.
“Our unique traits are what define us and our confidence and dedication are the traits that determine what we are capable of,” Aufie said. “Remember that we only truly fail when we fail to try, therefore do not be afraid to fly high and dream the biggest dream that you have in your heart.”
“Whether we go into college, the workforce, a trade school or the military, we must bring our unique gifts,” Holtgren said. “Our unique gifts can be applied to create a diverse culture, empower society, and improve our community. Again, decide on your role and play your part. Incorporate your passion and gifts into this ever-evolving role and most importantly, be excited for this new journey that’s about to begin.”
Brawley closed his speech by encouraging his classmates to see their dreams through.
“There are many roads to happiness and I hope everyone in the 2024 graduating class finds theirs,” Brawley said. “I’m honored to be graduating with the class of 2024 and I look forward to seeing all of our accomplishments in the future.”
