SOUTH HAVEN — The Dowagiac golf team will be headed back to the Michigan High School Athletic Association Division 3 State Golf Championships after grabbing the third and final qualifying spot Tuesday.
The Chieftains were unable to defend their regional championship, but shot 369 to finish behind champion Schoolcraft and runner-up South Haven at HawksHead Golf Course, which soot 353 and 357, respectively.
“Any time you can qualify for the state tournament it is an accomplishment,” said Dowagiac Coach Bob Turner. “Today was the second year in a row we qualified as a team. I’m not sure when the last time we did that is, not in the last 20 years. I’m not sure if because of last year’s finish the guys felt more pressure this year or not, but we were definitely not playing as confidently as we should have. Still, we had a couple new guys playing that had not played under this kind of pressure and we were still able to qualify. These guys have a lot to be proud of.”
The Eagles’ Luke Rykse earned medalist honors with a round of 81.
Dowagiac was led by Travis Rehborg’s 88. Dane and Luke Spagnoli shot 93, while Jeremiah Bond shot 95. Cayden Dorman finished with a 103.
Buchanan, which finished 14th overall, was led by Tyler Frame, who shot 100.
Brandywine finished one place behind the Bucks in 15th. Brady Wright shot 98 to lead the Bobcats.

Edwardsburg and Niles failed to qualify at the Division 2 Regional at Bedford Valley in Battle Creek Tuesday.
Gull Lake won the regional championship with a 302, while Mason was third with a 305 and Jackson Northwest 311.
Niles finished 12th overall.
Aiden Krueger shot 79 to lead the Vikings.
Edwardsburg placed 14th and was led by Andrew Kurowski, who shot 82.
