MARCELLUS — It might not always be pretty, but the Cassopolis softball team always seems to learn and grow from its experiences on the field.

Wednesday’s 9-8 and 14-7 over host Marcellus was a case in point.

DeShaun Curtis’ Lady Rangers didn’t get much pre-game warm-up time in after arriving later than expected due to bus availability.

Cassopolis rallied from a 7-3 deficit in the opener before exploding for six runs over the final two innings to pick up the win.

Marcellus scored four runs in the first before adding a single run in the third, two in the fifth and its final run in the seventh inning.

Cassopolis tallied once in the second, two in the fourth, four in the sixth and twice in the seventh.

“We arrived late and didn’t get much time to warm up, but that’s no excuse because you have to take care of the job. We had three or four errors that first inning or two,” said Cassopolis head coach DaShaun Curtis.

“I thought we showed a little more heart though. We normally shut down when we commit early mistakes like that. Marcellus hit the ball very well late in the second game, but we were able to slowly put it away. We made some errors, but we also made some real nice plays. This young team is getting better.”

Mackenzie Boyer went the distance in the circle to pick up the win for Cassopolis. Boyer gave up 15 hits, four earned runs with three walks and six strikeouts.

“Mackenzie got a little tired, but she does very well and throw strikes for us,” Curtis added.

Addie Curtis suffered the loss for Marcellus allowing seven hits, four earned runs, six walks with five strikeouts.

Cassopolis was led by Ryley Bowsher with two hits, including a triple, with one run scored and one RBI. Jordin Heiman collected two hits with four RBI. Janayla Franklin walked twice. Atyanna Alford collected two hits, including a double, and scored twice. Ella Smith scored a pair of runs for the Rangers runs. Alexandria Westphal walked three times and had one RBI. Cheyenne Redmond added a single and scored three runs.

Redmond and Alford had three stolen bases apiece and Franklin two.

Cassopolis came out on fire in the nightcap, scoring eight runs in the first frame. The Rangers built its lead by adding two runs in the fifth and four in the seventh.

Marcellus scored all seven of its runs in the fifth.

Boyer went the distance again yielding seven hits, two-earned runs with five strikeouts.

Lanie Heuring took the loss in relief of Curtis, the starter. Heuring walked one and struck out seven.

Bowsher scored three runs, had four hits and one RBI. Franklin collected two hits and scored twice. Boyer added one hit and scored a pair of runs. Alford had two hits, including a double, four RBI and scored twice. Smith added a double, two RBI and one run. Redmond had three hits and scored once. Tori Brooks had one hit and one RBI. Heiman scored once. Sienna Young had two hits and scored twice.

Alford added four stolen bases, while Bowsher added three and Redmond and Young had two each.
