DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac softball team ran its winning streak to 10 games as it swept visiting Coloma 11-2 and 8-4 Thursday afternoon.

A seven-run fifth inning sealed the victory for the Chieftains in the opening game. Dowagiac led 4-2 heading into the fifth.

The Chieftains finished with 10 hits in the contest, including a 3-for-4 performance from Aubrey Busby, who also drove in a pair of runs. Marlie Carpenter singled and doubled for Dowagiac, which also got two hits and three RBIs from Claire Hess.

Rebecca Guernsey went the distance to earn the victory.

In the nightcap, Dowagiac and Coloma were deadlocked at 4-4 heading to the bottom of the fifth when Dowagiac scored three runs. The Chieftains added an insurance run in the sixth inning.

Dowagiac (17-7) ended the game with 12 more hits, led by Olivia McIntosh, who was 3-for-4 with a double and two RBIs. Busby was 3-for-4 as well with two RBIs, while Bree Behnke singled and doubled for the Chieftains.

Addie Wilson started and worked the first four innings before giving way to Guernsey, who pitched the final three innings.

“We played some pretty good ball against a pretty good team tonight,” said Dowagiac Coach Mike Behnke. “All three of our outfielders made great plays taking hits away, and our infield did the same. And our catcher threw out three baserunners. We also got many timely two-out hits to score runs. All in all, we played well and look to keep it going this weekend and win our second tournament of the year.”
