BERRIEN COUNTY — Amy Byrd announced her candidacy as a Republican for the Office of Berrien County Prosecutor.  A fifteen-year career prosecutor, Byrd aims to serve Berrien County’s citizens and the Prosecutor’s Office in this new role.

Hard work and community service are deeply ingrained in Byrd’s upbringing.  Raised on her family’s vegetable farm in Benton Township, she experienced firsthand the value of dedication and teamwork.  After completing her studies at the University of Notre Dame and Thomas M. Cooley Law School, she was drawn back to Southwest Michigan, where she began her career at the Prosecutor’s Office, a testament to her commitment to her roots and her community.

Throughout her tenure as an assistant prosecuting attorney, Byrd has demonstrated versatility and adaptability, handling a diverse range of cases.  Her experience spans the appellate division, the adult criminal division, the juvenile division, and the neglect and abuse division.  She has successfully prosecuted complex cases, including homicides, criminal sexual conduct, embezzlement, drug trafficking, and delivery of controlled substances causing death.  Her unwavering commitment to justice, whether for an individual or the community, is at the heart of her work.

Currently serving as the representative for the Prosecutor’s Office on the Drug Treatment Court and as a member of the Opioid Taskforce, Byrd is deeply involved in addressing critical issues facing the community, including substance abuse and addiction. Her commitment extends beyond the courtroom, instructing on courtroom testimony for the Department of Natural Resources and the Berrien County Sheriff’s Department.  Most recently, she has been invited to present on drug trafficking prosecution for the 2024 Drug Initiatives Conference this July in Lansing.

Over her career, Byrd has been fortunate to work alongside esteemed judges and attorneys who have mentored her and cultivated her appreciation and respect for the criminal justice system.  Equally rewarding are her relationships with community partners such as law enforcement, treatment court service providers, and advocacy groups such as the Berrien County Council for Children.  It is her privilege to work hand in hand with those tirelessly dedicated to serving survivors and ensuring the safety of the community.

Outside the office, when there is a break from shuttling children from one activity to another, Byrd and her family enjoy life on the family farm.  After returning to her roots fifteen years ago to serve the citizens of Berrien County, she is ready to take the next step in service as the Berrien County Prosecutor.
