Chieftains sweep Bobcats and Tigers

DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac Chieftains on swept their second straight home Lakeland Conference meet Tuesday.
The Dowagiac boys track team defeated Brandywine 92-33 and Benton Harbor 110-10. The Chieftain girls track team swept the Bobcats (90-37) and the Tigers (101-10).
Dowagiac’s Arturo Benitez swept the 100- and 200-meters with times of 11.63 and 23.91, respectively. He was also a member of the Chieftains’ winning 400-meter relay team, along with, Avery Amundsen, Zimerian Jones and Jaylin Medrano. That unit posted a time of 47.53.
Benitez won his fourth event of the day as he helped Amundsen, Joshua Winchester-Jones and Cameron White win the 400-meter relay with a time of 1:37.77.
Dowagiac completed the sweep of the three relays that were run as Winchester-Jones, Owen Saylor, Devin Rock and White won the 1,600-meter relay with a time of 3:42.58.
Saylor would be a four-time winner as he also captured the 800-meters (1:59.07), the 1,600-meters (5:11.66) and the 3,200-meters (11:54.43).
Winchester-Jones was a three-time winner as he also took first in the 400-meters with a time of 53.17. Rock was a three-time winner after capturing the 110-meter high hurdles with a time of 19.66, and winning the high jump with a height of 5-6.
In the field events, the Chieftains’ Max Stelmasiak won the shot put with a toss of 38-4.5.
Brandywine picked up several first-place finishes as Zachary King won the 300-meter intermediate hurdles (54.17), Devean Whitaker won the discus (109-8) and Kevin Roberts won the pole vault (13-4) and the long jump (19-6.5).
Dowagiac’s Audrey Johnson was a four-time winner on the girls’ side.
Johnson won the 200-meters with a time of 28.27, the 400-meters with a time of 1:01.80, and was a member of the Chieftains winning 800- and 1,600-meter the relay teams.
The 800-meter relay team, which also consisted of Shamyra Clark, Tessa Deering and Khamari Mack, posted a time of 1:53.27. The 1,600-meter squad, which also consisted of Alexandra Gasca, Lanijiyah Moss and Jocelyn Kiner, ran a time of 4:56.24.
Dowagiac also won the 400-meter relay with the team of Clark, Hayden Hagemann, Mack and Moss posting a time of 53.22.
Kiner was a triple winner as she also took first place in the 1,600-meters (6:38.28) and the 3,200-meters (14:51.53). Moss was a triple winner as she also won the discus with a toss of 73-0. Nadiah Murray swept the 100- and 300-meter hurdles with times of 19.78 and 56.97, respectively.
Natyla Brookins won the shot put for the Chieftains with a throw of 25-1.5.
Miley Young won a pair of events for the Bobcats as she won the 100-meters with a time of 14.45 and the 800-meters with a time of 2:35.80.
The Bobcats also picked up first place finishes in the high jump with Karleigh Byrd clearing 4-8 and Ireland Prenkert winning the pole vault with a height of 6-6.
