Dowagiac, Niles split pair of non-league games

NILES — Former Wolverine Conference foes Dowagiac and host Niles split a non-league softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon.
The Chieftains won the opening game 9-5, while the Vikings rallied to win the nightcap 12-11.
In the opening game, Dowagiac scored four runs in seventh inning to rally for the win.
A pair of errors by Niles played a key role in Dowagiac being able to seal the victory.
After a lead-off single by Bree Behnke, the Vikings had back-to-back miscues which loaded the bases.
With one out, Ella Parker singled to drive in a run, while Olivia McIntosh followed with another single to make it 8-4. Emily Henry capped the scoring with a double.
The Chieftains finished the game with 11 hits, including two each by Henry, Behnke, Parker and McIntosh.
Rebecca Guernsey picked up the victory in the circle for Dowagiac.
Niles had 13 hits, including a home run by Kayla Kiggins and a double by Khloe Kiggins.
Haylea Wilken suffered the loss.
In the nightcap, the Vikings had 15 more hits, led by E Garrard and Wilken, both of whom had three hits.
Morgan Clanton earned the victory as she allowed just two earned runs.
Guernsey suffered the loss for Dowagiac.
