BUCHANAN — It was a busy start to the week for area tennis teams Monday.

In non-conference matches, Buchanan defeated Schoolcraft 6-2, Our Lady of the Lake-Bridgman defeated Dowagiac 8-0, while in Wolverine Conference play, Edwardsburg defeated Paw Paw 6-1 and Vicksburg blanked Niles 8-0.

On Saturday, Brandywine participated in the Vicksburg Cancer Tournament, fishing third behind the champion Bulldogs and runner-up Kalamazoo Loy Norrix.

 

Schoolcraft at Buchanan

The Bucks swept the singles flights to pick up the victory over the Eagles.

The singles play was competitive, which included Buchanan’s Norahh Kutemeier defeating Molly Evans 1-6, 7-5 and 10-4 at No. 3 singles.

Finley Kehoe and Addison McKean, at No. 3 doubles, and Morgan Weldy and Taylor Sweeney at No. 4 doubles sealed the victory for Buchanan. Weldy and Sweeney defeated Treasure Fox and Allyson Bugardt 3-6, 6-3 and 10-5.

 

Our Lady at Dowagiac

The co-op squad dominated the Chieftains in both singles and doubles.

Our Lady/Bridgman dropped just nine games in singles, and were even better in doubles, where it dropped just seven games.

The most competitive match of the day was at No. 2 singles where Dowagiac’s Lauren Baisbaugh was defeated by Lindsey Salmon 6-4 and 6-2.

 

Edwardsburg at Paw Paw

The Eddies stayed in the thick of the Wolverine Conference race with its win over Paw Paw.

Edwardsburg improved to 3-1, just a game behind league-leader Otsego, which improved to 4-0 with its showdown victory over Sturgis, which drops into a second-place tie with the Eddies.

Edwardsburg swept the doubles flights and won three out of four singles flights. Its only loss came at No. 1 singles where Alyssa Cain defeated Leah Stern in a hotly contested match, 6-7(5), 7-6(1) and 7-5.

 

Niles at Vicksburg

The host Bulldogs remained tied for second place with Edwardsburg and Sturgis with their win over Niles.

In a dominating performance, Vicksburg swept the singles flights, dropping just three games.

The best match of the day came at No. 3 doubles where Lucy Custard and Cheyenne Small was defeated by Isabelle Hahn and Jenna Schramer 6-4 and 6-3.

 

Vicksburg Cancer Tournament

Tressa Hullinger and Jaclyn Franks captured the No. 1 doubles title, while Louisa Peterson and Aubree Murray were runners-up at No. 3 doubles.

Sydney Olson was third at No. 2 singles. Ashlyn Kohler and Allie Curtis Lee were third at No. 2 doubles.
