BUCHANAN - A mid-life career change worked out quite well for Carmen Bovo.
The former banker was recently named police officer of the year in Buchanan for 2005 by Police Chief William Marx. Bovo was also awarded the Distinguished Service Award by the department for his part in a drug bust last year.
Bovo said he and three other Buchanan officers “spearheaded” the December bust that resulted in an arrest of an individual in possession of seven ounces of crack cocaine. The drug bust was one of the largest in Buchanan's history.
Bovo worked as a banker for nearly 20 years before quitting the profession to become a police officer in Buchanan. “I always wanted to be a cop,” Bovo said.
At age 42, Bovo said he left his job at NBD Bank in Benton Harbor and entered the police academy.
