Big fourth quarter helps Rangers earn sweep of Marcellus

MARCELLUS — A 22-point fourth quarter allowed visiting Cassopolis to complete a sweep of Marcellus in Southwest 10 Conference basketball Tuesday night.

After the Rangers cruised to a 53-19 girls basketball victory, Cassopolis outscored the Wildcats 22-8 in the final eight minutes of the boy basketball game to earn a 71-53 victory.

Marcellus (2-4, 2-2 Southwest 10) kept the game close for one quarter as it trailed Cassopolis 13-9.

But the Rangers (3-2, 3-1 Southwest 10) shutout the Wildcats in the second quarter to take a 21-9 halftime lead. Cassopolis gave up just two points in the third quarter as it extended its advantage to 38-11 heading into the final eight minutes of play.

Ryley Bowsher scored a game-high 13 points to lead the Rangers, who also got seven points from Ella Smith and Nola Hawkins, while Mackenzie Boyer and Atyanna Alford both finished with six points.

Marcellus was led by Ladora Bet Sargis’ six points. Sophia Affrieso and Emma Melendez both had four points.

The Rangers return to action Thursday when they head to Hartford for another Southwest 10 Conference contest.

 

Boys basketball

Cassopolis and Marcellus battled back and forth for the first three quarters before the Rangers exploded in the final eight minutes to pick up the victory.

Trading the multiple times throughout, Cassopolis led 16-15 after one quarter and 32-29 at halftime.

The Rangers extended their lead to 49-45 heading into the final quarter.

Kenny May led a balanced Cassopolis offense with 18 points, while Jadyn Brown added 16 points, Malachi Ward 15 points and Ayden Gilliam 10 points.

Marcellus was led by Beau Ferguson’s game-high 20 points. Nathan Mihills added nine, Parker Adams 8 and Abram Coffey seven points.

The Rangers host Hartford Friday night for another Southwest 10 game.
