DEFIANCE, Ohio — The Defiance Tri-State Border War Wrestling Tournament is rolling along with action scheduled for today and Friday.
Dowagiac and Niles are both competing in the tournament that has 56 teams currently shown as scoring points.
Napoleon is the current leader with 96.5 points. Niles is currently 21st with 42 points and Dowagiac 34th with 26.5 points.
Undefeated so far for the Chieftains are Israel Villegas (3-0) at 144-pounds and Cal Chapman at 285-pounds. Still alive in the tournament as of 4 p.m. Thursday are Markus Ottinger (1-1) at 106 and Cameron White (3-1) at 138.
Villegas has three 18-0 technical falls through the first three rounds. He has picked up wins over Alexander Dolder, of Maumee, Ulijah Mansard, of Sandusky, and Riley Smith, of Sylvania Southwest.
Chapman, who received a first-round bye, decisioned Vincent Parke, of Columbia City, 14-2 in the second round.
Undefeated so far for the Vikings are Sam Rucker (2-0) at 175-pounds, Julian Means-Flewellen (2-0) at 190-pounds, Ronald Fielder (2-0) at 215-pounds and Chase Brawley (2-0) at 285-pounds.
Still alive for Niles are Korbin Hughes (1-1) at 106 and Lloyd Brown (2-1) at 120.
Rucker received an opening-round bye and then pinned Reonte Shelton, of Sycamore, in 3:28. Means-Flewellen, who also received a bye, pinned second-round opponent Caleb Rust, of Columbia City, in 2:58. Brawley, after a first-round bye, pinned Kyle Salght, of Bath, in 36 seconds.
