NILES — The Salvation Army of Niles served about 300 families in southeast Berrien and Cass counties with Christmas assistance this season.
Some 700 children received toys along with books, stocking stuffers, and 35 bikes. There were also pieces of clothing given to families and handmade blankets and hats and gloves. 115 Teenagers received a gift and a $25 gift card. Every family received a ham and a $25 gift card for food.
Several parents cried as they walked through the toy shop, choosing what their children would like, saying I’ll be able to give my children Christmas. Another woman sobbed when she came saying She didn’t know how she was going to buy food, and now she can.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to be able to serve our community in this way we are thankful for our donors and partnerships with Toys For Tots and St. John’s Church, who allows us to use their building to do our toy shop,” said Jodi Montgomery, of the Salvation Army.
