DOWAGIAC — Maggie Weller will join teammate Alanah Smith at Southwestern Michigan College next season.

Weller, a senior, has signed a National Junior College Athletic Association national letter of intent to continue her academic and athletic career at SMC and will play for the Roadrunners women’s basketball team.

Weller, who was a first-team All-Lakeland Conference selection last year and an All-Wolverine Conference honorable mention pick in 2021-22, becomes the second member of the Roadrunners’ 2024 recruiting class, joining Oliva Robinson, of Roscoe, Illinois.

Weller and Smith combined to lead Dowagiac to the Division 2 District championship in 2021-22, its first championship in 14 years. The duo followed that up with another run at the district title last March, but were defeated in the finals by former Wolverine Conference foe Edwardsburg.

“Maggie is a knockdown shooter,” said first-year SMC Coach Jay Jenkins. “She definitely has the size and abilities to compete at the college level. I am excited to have her join the SMC family.”

Weller’s high school coach, Jason Turner, agrees with Jenkins.

“Maggie has been a great student-athlete throughout her high school career at Dowagiac,” he said. “I am excited that I get to coach her for one more year, but even more excited that she is going to get to play basketball at the next level. She has been a vital part of our success over the last two years and is a great leader both on and off the court. She continues to put the work in each and every day to improve and reach her goals. I am so proud of her and cannot wait to see her play her senior season.”

Weller also excels in volleyball and soccer for the Chieftains.

She earned first-team All-Lakeland Conference in volleyball in 2021 and was an honorable mention pick this fall.

The Roadrunners headed into Tuesday night’s Michigan Community College Athletic Association non-divisional road contest against Henry Ford College undefeated at 7-0. Southwestern Michigan broke its school record for points scored in a game in back-to-back contests as it defeated Olive-Harvey 108-51 and Great Lake Christian Academy 111-49.

This year, the team remains undefeated at 7-0, including a 52-point win margin over North Central Michigan in the inaugural Roadrunner Classic, a 62-point win margin vs. Great Lakes Christian and a 75-point win margin vs. Andrews University.

The Roadrunners also set school records for team two-point field goals made in a game (43), team free throws made in a game (21), fewest points allowed in a game (18), team assists in a game (31), team rebounds in a game (67) and team steals in a game (25).
