NILES - More than 80 people are without a job after a Niles facility abruptly closed its doors Wednesday morning.
The marketing and advertising firm, Vertis, announced it was closing its Niles location in an effort to consolidate the company, an emailed statement from the company read. Dave Laverty, senior vice president of Vertis, said in the statement the advertising inserts printed at the local facility will now be handled in other areas of the region.
The statement also said the company is “providing our long-term employees with extended financial support” and attempting to find employment opportunities for other workers through local companies.
The company employs 84 in Niles and is located in the industrial park.
President and CEO of the Four Flags Chamber of Commerce, Ron Sather, said he was told last fall by the plant's manager the facility was over-staffed.
Sather also added the local plant made a positive impact in the community.
The Daily Star attempted to contact Vertis Wednesday afternoon and was directed to call the company's personal relations firm, Formula. Through Formula, the Star was told Vertis was not disclosing any information, including employee salaries or plans for the building and equipment.
Some of Vertis' products and services include consumer research, targeted advertising inserts and interactive marketing. The company is headquartered in Baltimore and has facilities throughout the U.S.
