NILES - Not only is receiving a call in the middle of the night annoying, it can be extremely scary. For a 2 a.m. call may signify a death in the family, or car accident of a relative.
For about a week, some people in Berrien County have been experiencing hang-up telephone calls in the middle of the night, according to Richard Huff, Chief of Police for the City of Niles.
From the information the police have available, the calls started last Thursday, Jan. 26 and usually occur between midnight and 4 a.m.
People have reported receiving the calls on both cellular phones as well as on land line telephones.
At this time it appears there is some type of equipment trouble at one of the many telephone companies that service Berrien County.
SBC has technical people looking into the trouble, but as of now they have not been able to pin point the cause.
The Niles City Police Department is keeping a log of these hang up telephone calls to assist SBC's technical employees with solving this problem.
If you receive one of these calls between midnight and 4 a.m. you can call the Niles City Police Department at 683-1313 to have your information added to the log.
The police dispatcher will ask you for your telephone number, the name of the phone company you have service with, the date and time of the call. If you have caller ID, they will ask for the information that appeared on the caller ID display at the time of the call.
