DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac Union School District Board of Education hosted its regular monthly meeting Monday at Dowagiac Middle School.

After the pledge of allegiance and correspondence, the public was given the chance to speak, however no report was given. Following the hearing of citizens, Stacy Ritchie described the financial report and explained that the audit would be finished soon.

Next, Superintendent Jonathan Whan shared his report. Whan recognized the 14 new hires to the school district and thanked them for their commitment and dedication to the students. The Superintendent pointed out the new Board of Education banner that pictured their mission “to educate all individuals to their maximum potential”, and their vision “enter to learn, leave to serve”. The board then discussed their new business and voted on several issues.

• The motion was carried for recommendation of hire for three individuals: Jennifer Michiels at Dowagiac Middle School for Special Education, Scott Floyd at Dowagiac Union High School for Social Studies, and Sara Melvin at Justus Gage for Kindergarten. 
• The request of approval for the Zero Eyes service agreement was carried. 
• The out of state “High School Close Up” trip for Spring 2023 was approved. 
• Carrie Freeman and Tracey Hatcher were nominated as MASB delegate assembly representatives.
