SISTER LAKES — Bookworms in a local community have a new outlet to lean on, thanks to the efforts of a Sister Lakes resident.

Beth Corwin recently installed a Little Free Library on the corner of Timmons Rd. and M-152. 

Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that promotes neighborhood book exchanges, usually in the form of book boxes. According to the organization’s website, millions of books are exchanged each year through Little Free Library book exchanges. Once registered, the organization will add Blauer’s box to its map, which allows people to locate Little Free Libraries in their area using its website.

Corwin, a librarian at Grace Christian School in Watervliet, applied for the Little Free Library’s  Impact Program, which provides no-cost Little Free Library book exchanges to underserved communities where they can make a meaningful impact on book access and literacy engagement.

The program accepted Corwin’s proposal.

“They sent the library, a post and a box of books to be put in right away,” she said.

Corwin believes her Free Little Library has something for everyone and hopes her Little Free Library encourages the next generation of readers.

“I love young adult books, but I want to be able to have Spanish and young kid books, too,” she said. “I want to aim more for school-aged children. The community helps keep it stocked, it’s just about making sure books get in the hands of kids who want to read them.”
