NILES - It is not often that someone gives away $250 after just winning a contest. But, that was exactly the case on Saturday at Trivia Night for Big Brothers Big Sisters
The winning table, which was from the Niles District Library, was awarded the $250 and the group immediately turned around and donated the money back to Big Brothers Big Sisters.
More than 200 people showed up for the event held at St. Mark's Parish Hall and helped raise over $3,000. The competition took place between 19 tables that each seated 10 people. Groups paid $150 per table which, along with $1,000 collected from selling raffle tickets, generated cash to pay the winning table $250.
Pop and water were provided, beer and wine were sold throughout the night and people were encouraged to bring tailgating food.
The quiz categories covered an array of topics, which, Rossow said, helps make the contest enjoyable for everyone.
Door prizes were also given away, many of which came from donations by Advanced Auto who gave over $200 in various items. Another prize included a landscape architecture design worth $500 that provided the winner with a review of their property and a plan for a new landscape.
Trivia was not the only game used during the night. In ‘Heads or Tails,' contestants stood up and rested their hands on top of either their heads or hips, and waited for a flip of a coin. If the coin turned up heads, those with their hands on their hips had to sit down, and vice-versa. The process was repeated for those left standing until only one contestant remained.
Wise said Big Brothers Big Sisters hopes to do two more Trivia Nights in 2006. The next event has already been planned for May 20.
