Let’s drive the tractor to church

Published 4:55 pm Monday, September 5, 2011

Members and friends of Portage Prairie United Methodist Church will be driving their tractors —old and new, large and small — to church Sunday.
The show of tractors is part of the Third Annual Heritage Day at the rural church at 2450 Orange Rd., near the U..S 31 bypass exit 3 and U.S. Highway 12. The church also is about a mile north of the intersection of Bertrand and Orange roads.
Everyone is welcome to the worship service, which will start at 10 a.m., following a parade of tractors to the church from nearby Chicago Road. The tractor parade starts at 9:15 a.m.
The service will be held in an old-fashioned tent at  rear of the church. The service will feature hymn singing and special music by soloists Teri Sue Wines and Carol McKean. There will also be a special time to honor those who died and lost loved ones in the 9-11  terror attack.
The church also will also honor all 50-year and 50-year-plus members of the church, which was founded in 1851.
Pastor O’Ryan Rickard will be preaching on “Our Heritage as Children of God.”
Following the service there will be a hog roast and dinner. The hog roast is free to all. Members are asked to bring a dish to pass for the potluck. Plates, silverware and drinks will be provided. In case of rain, the dinner will be held inside in the large fellowship hall.
There also will be free wagon rides and various yard games for adults and children, and a softball game for all ages in the adjacent field.
Chairperson of the event is David Lichtenbarger. Call the church at (269) 695-6708 for more information about the tractor parade or the worship service.
