Brandywine teacher receives donated school items

NILES — Thursday was like Christmas, said Sue Jordon, a Brandywine Middle School science teacher.

“I don’t think I slept last night,” she said. “I was so excited.”

That was because she received three boxes of donated school items after school from the Rebecca Dewey chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, based in Three Oaks.

Jordon had requested a variety of items for the classroom for the start of the new semester, and the DAR delivered them.

Included were items that students quickly use up, such as pens, pencils and journals. Other items were to maximize the educational fun of a science project, such as colored construction paper.

Jordon also received a gift card and a bag of Hershey chocolates, despite not having them on her list. She said the best item was a four-pack of disinfectant spray — what she called “the invention of the century.”

The donation was part of a larger plan set forth by the Community Classroom Committee of the local DAR chapter. Each semester, the group either plans to spend money or time on a need that the Brandywine school district has.

Member Tifanni Dash said the district was chosen because it was on the border of two DAR chapters, meaning it was sometimes left out of events and programs.

The Rebecca Dewey chapter also hopes to better spread awareness of its student essay scholarships and its classroom grants in the district.
