DOWAGIAC — Stationed in front of a table filled with homemade jams, snowman-shaped cookies and other seasonal treats, Ada Springsteen and Carolyn Graham greeted visitors in the atrium of Ascension Borgess-Lee Memorial Hospital with a smile.
Springsteen and Graham, both volunteers with the Borgess-Lee Volunteers, helped accomplish the group’s mission to improve health status in the community by volunteering at the semi-annual Homemade, Handmade and Heartfelt Sale on Wednesday. Money raised from two semi-annual sales and gift shop are donated directly back to the hospital in the form of scholarships and yearly gifts to the hospital.
“We’ve both been volunteering for a long time,” Springsteen said of her and Graham’s years of service in the volunteer organization.
At the sale, a rush occurred during the hospital staff’s break, said Borgess-Lee Volunteers President Terri Moore.
Volunteers were coordinated into three shifts. Some helped during the morning hours of the sale, a group in the afternoon and a group aided with clean up. At 2 p.m., a third shift of volunteers helped to take down the sale.
During the sale, the gift shop was also open and sold an array of harvest-themed items.
“We are really happy with the turnout,” Moore said.
