CASSOPOLIS — A mother and daughter from Niles were sentenced to prison for their role in the April 23 robbery of the Sunrise Liquor store on Huntly Road near Niles.

Tajah Latrece Martin, 21, of Platt Street, and her mother, Lori Lynn Woods, 45, of Yankee Street, pleaded guilty to armed robbery causing serious injury and conspiracy to commit armed robbery causing serious injury and were each sentenced to two concurrent terms of 92 months to 15 years in prison.

Martin has credit for 158 days already served and must pay $2,016 in fines, costs and restitution. Woods has credit for 151 days served and must pay $2,016 in fines, costs and restitution.

The incident occurred April 23 when they and a third person, Bernard Gaston, robbed the Sunrise Liquor party store on Huntly Road and injured the clerk, Ranjit Singh Gill. Gaston is scheduled to be sentenced Oct. 18.

Fitz noted that both women went out of their way to injure Gill. Woods jammed the door into his head and then walked across him. Martin stomped on the man’s head.

“They had no care for the safety of the victim. Such an injury can cause brain damage or death,” he said. “Their goal was filthy lucre.”

Judge Herman noted that Woods and Gaston, her boyfriend, were tracked to Forler’s Motel on Yankee Street. Woods first denied being there but later admitted they robbed the store because she needed money to pay the rent.
