BUCHANAN — Voices of praise and worship rang in the air from 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Buchanan Common, just behind downtown Buchanan. Members of area churches took turns singing solo, with bands or in praise teams at the ninth annual Faith and Family Day, hosted by the Buchanan Area Ministerial Association.
Faith and Family Day combined events meant for family fun with services meant to help community members. While live music was played and inflatable slides and obstacle courses were bounced on, free backpacks, food, haircuts and child identification kits were dispersed by local organizations.
Faith and Family Day’s backpack giveaway is one of its most well-regarded events, said organizer Alice Kring. Participating churches gathered backpacks through the seasons, then distributed them to registered attendees.
In years past, an upwards of 450 backpacks were given away. This year, organizer Jann Mitchell said 263 people pre-registered to receive a backpack. She said once official numbers are tallied, the number will be much higher, though, because people were signing up the day of.
The event is a public way to show the interconnectedness of area churches, regardless of denomination, Kring said.
Faith and Family Day has its roots in Buchanan’s former yearly event, Old Mill Festival. Once the festival ceased, its Faith and Family Day program continued on its own.
