JONES, MICH. — The Iron Shoe Distillery and Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association will be hosting the inaugural Iron Shoe Distillery Lawless 50 at 9 a.m. on Sunday.

Race registration will begin at 8 a.m. at Dr. T.K. Lawless State Park, 15122 Monkey Run St., Vandalia. The park’s mountain bike trail is 10 miles long and of an intermediate skill level, said the park’s website.

“The idea came from Northern Indiana Mountain Bike Association,” said Howard Tuthill, the owner of Iron Shoe Distillery. “They reached out to us to see if we would be interested in being the title sponsor. Of course, we were interested. I love biking and wanted to really be involved in the event.”

NIMBA is a not-for-profit, all-volunteer group dedicated to the sports of mountain biking, according to their website. The group is a chapter of the International Mountain Bike Association.

While NIMBA has put on bike race series in the past, Tuthill heard from the group that there has been a mixed success across the board.

“The trend is moving towards these longer culture endurance type of events,” Tuthill said. “This year, instead of doing five or six individual races, [NIMBA] is just doing one big race.”

Racers have the option of competing in the 50-mile Full Lawless, 32-mile Half Lawless or the 16-mile Lil’ Lawless. The full Lawless costs $50, the half costs $45 and the Lil Lawless costs $40.

Funds raised from the event will go toward NIMBA’s mission of helping riders find trails, promote the responsible use of mountain bike trails, maintain existing trails and assist local parks departments in developing new trails.

Immediately following the races, a party complete with cocktails served by Iron Shoe Distillery, food from Jim’s Smokin’ Café, cash prizes and a live band will keep racers entertained.

Riders can register for the race at bikereg.com/lawless-50. Deadline for online registration is today at midnight. Riders can also register onsite for an additional fee.
