Big third-inning helps Bucks reach finals

LAWTON — It is all about mentality for the Buchanan Bucks.
After Parchment had just scored three runs in the fourth inning to cut Buchanan’s Division 3 regional semifinal lead to a single run, 4-3, junior pitcher Brad VanOverberghe had a simple message for his coach.
“They are not scoring again,” he said.
VanOverberghe was true to his word as he slammed the door on the Panthers and then stepped to the plate the very next inning and delivered the final blow, a lead-off double that led to the Bucks scoring two more runs to ice their 6-3 victory at Lawton High School Wednesday.
Buchanan will now compete in the regional championship game at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday against Bronson at Coloma High School.
The Vikings rallied to edge Watervliet 4-3 in the other semifinal.
“Brad pitched well,” said first-year coach Jim Brawley. “He gave up a bunch of ground balls that made their way through the field. But he came back and made sure they wouldn’t score again.”
“I told coach, they are not scoring again,” VanOverberghe said. “I came in with that mindset and I got it done.”
VanOverberghe and Brawley were also pleased to see Buchanan score four runs in the third inning to set the tone.
“When the team makes plays behind me, that is all that I can ask for,” VanOverberghe said.
“It’s huge you get that four-run lead,” Brawley said. “They cut the lead but, we were (still ahead) going into the fifth.”
Buchanan (23-8) got run-scoring singles from Cam Lorance and Adeen Harrington to stake the team to a 2-0 lead. Sam Riley’s two-run single in the third made it 4-0.
After the Panthers (21-11-2) had cut the lead to 4-3 thanks to RBI singles by Alex Buzior, Seth Somers and Jacob Bielski, VanOverberghe stepped to the plate and doubled to get the Bucks’ rally started.
Harrington singled VanOverberghe home before scoring on a double by Riley.
Parchment would not threaten again as it went down in order in the sixth and only drew a walk in the seventh, before being retired.
