DOWAGIAC — Wednesday morning, the smell of fresh baked bread and fresh asparagus could be found on the lawn of the Dowagiac Area History Museum.

The Dowagiac Farm and Artisan Market opened for the season Saturday, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday and Wednesday until the end of the season at the corner of Railroad and Division streets.

On Wednesday, the second day of the farm market, the market welcomed a new vendor in addition to some old faces.

William Crawford, of Sister Lakes, attended the farm market to sell fresh baked sourdough bread made by his wife, Katrina. Planning to attend the farm market every Wednesday, Crawford said that his wife will offer different flavors of bread each week, based on whatever inspires her. Wednesday, he sold loaves of cinnamon and garlic bread.

“[Katrina] makes it all out of our house,” Crawford said. “She’s been doing this type of sourdough bread for about five years now, and she has pretty much mastered it.”

Crawford said he chose to sell at the farm market at the request of the Dowagiac Downtown Development Authority. He added that he was excited to be able to sell his wife’s creations close to home.

“It’s really fun to be able to meet people I haven’t met and strike up conversations,” he said.

Sprague Farms and 1,2,3 We Create were also at the Farm Market Wednesday morning.
