A Lovely Nest store to close, continue selling online

NILES – Downtown store A Lovely Nest may be closing its physical location on June 1, but the modern rustic décor business has no plans to stop selling, said owner Kelsey Johns.
Johns and her husband, Will, still plan to keep their online store running, where they will continue to sell items ranging from windows to corbels, cedar wood shelves to coffee mugs and custom clothing to custom signs. A Lovely Nest will also have a physical presence at some area events as a vendor, and it will continue offering décor workshops.
“It’s a bittersweet thing,” Kelsey said. “We’re both kind of sad. We were here the other day, and we were like, ‘Did we make the right decision?’”
After 15 months, Kelsey said a number of factors — from running multiple businesses to ill timing to having a baby — led to her and Will’s decision to close their physical store. She also said that her online site was very successful before opening in downtown Niles, and it continued to remain that way even with a storefront.
Once A Lovely Nest’s storefront closes, the business will be present in a way that is similar to its roots. In early 2015, Kelsey and her husband launched A Lovely Nest as an online store. They had been encouraged to do so by family and friends after they began selling customized items to people through Facebook as a side job.
After the online store launched, the Niles area couple began set up booths at area events to sell their items in person. In February 2018, the Johns opened their 217 E. Main St. location.
Kelsey said the closure is a start of new chapter in her, her husband’s and A Lovely Nest’s lives, but she will miss being in downtown Niles.
“You feel [like] a part of the community when you’re downtown with all the businesses,” she said.
Kelsey noted that some businesses liked to promote her store and offer assistance, and she enjoyed returning the favor.
She will also miss those that came through A Lovely Nest’s doors.
“The thing I’m going to miss most is the loyal customers and the customers I get to know and see their faces,” she said. “We know each other by name.”
Nonetheless, Kelsey and her customers will have future opportunities to see one another in person. While no official dates for vending and workshops have been planned, both will begin soon after A Lovely Nest’s products are moved out of its location. Open workshops will take place in other area businesses.
Most workshops allow participants to make their own wood signs, but kids activities and in-home workshop events have been available in the past, too. Prospective participants can sign on A Lovely Nest’s website, alovelynest.com. Events will be posted on the site and the business’ Facebook page.
The business will still offer standard and customized items on its site. If a buyer lives in the area and does not want it shipped, a delivery location can be established, said Kelsey.
A Lovely Nest’s last day will be from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 1. Those with in-store gift certificates will expire that day and cannot be used online, Johns said.
