EDWARDSBURG — For the third time since 2013, the Edwardsburg tennis team is the Division 3 regional champion.

The Eddies also won regional championships in 2013 and 2016.

Edwardsburg, in between rainouts, has fashioned a solid regular season, which included going 3-1 in Wolverine Conference South Division matches and a third-place finish at the league tournament.

Last Thursday, the Eddies showed the power of the Wolverine Conference by scoring 28 points to easily outdistance runners-up Lakeshore and Jackson Parma Western, both of whom had 22 points.

And just like much of the regular season, weather played a role as rain forced matches to be moved around and eventually wound up indoors for the finale.

“Winning the regional was a testament to the hard work and dedication of this team,” said Edwardsburg coach Kim Bartz. “These girls set a goal to reach the state finals each year. Their commitment to playing year-round tennis and love of the game allows this goal to become achievable. During the regional tournament, these girls played some of their best tennis and I am so proud of their accomplishments.”

The Eddies were the model of consistency as all four singles players scored three points, while all four doubles teams scored the maximum four points as regional champions.

Winning titles for Edwardsburg were Grace VanOverBerghe and Mckinley Nadai at No. 1 doubles, Margaret Brown and Elizabeth Brown at No. 2 doubles, Serena Rems and Channing Green at No. 3 doubles, as well as Ashley Low and Claire Bartz at No. 4 doubles.

Annika Smith, Leah Hosang, Ashley Smith and Claire Deak were all runners-up in singles.

The Eddies will compete in the state finals at Novi High School May 31 and June 1.

“In order to place high at the state tournament, the draw becomes a factor and first-round matches,” Bartz said.
