EDWARDSBURG — Coaches Rachel Carlson of Buchanan and Dean Dixon of Edwardsburg both are looking to finish the regular season strong as they prepare for next week’s district tournament.

Both the Bucks and the Eddies will have their work cut out for them in the respective districts.

The two squared off Monday afternoon with host Edwardsburg sweeping Buchanan 7-3 and 6-2.

“The girls understand they will be considered an underdog on Lakeshore’s turf, but the team has battled that stigma since the beginning of the year,” Dixon said. “We are too little, too young. It’s been the main driving force and motivation of the team throughout the year and they have shown they aren’t afraid of a battle. It’s going to be a David vs. Goliath atmosphere and the team is fully aware that they must play flawless ball to compete.”

Edwardsburg (22-8) is in the Division 2 district at South Haven, but the pre-district contest on Tuesday against the Lancers is in Stevensville.

The winner advances to face Niles, whom many feels is the district favorite.

Meanwhile, Buchanan (15-13) will be in the Constantine district, where it will be one of the favorites, along with arch-rival Brandywine and Centreville.

“I have always believed as a coach that playing better competition will, in turn, make us better,” Carlson said. “Over the last three weeks we have been in many close games and pressure situations, so we will be ready for anything thrown at us at tournament time. We have handled our adversity well and been ready to pick each other up when we need to. We are going to keep swinging the bats and playing our defense.”

On Monday, Edwardsburg used a two-run fourth inning to pull away and win the first game.

The Eddies had 12 hits against the Bucks, including doubles by Bailey Anson, Haley Masten and Ashley Pion.

In the nightcap, Edwardsburg pounded out 10 more hits, including doubles by Kaitlynne Allen, Ella Castelucci and Pion.
