DOWAGIAC — Those wishing to spice up their garden or home with plants and donate to a good cause have a chance this weekend thanks to an upcoming sale.

The Town and Country Garden Club of Dowagiac is hosting a plant sale from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday at the Commercial Street Plaza, which is located on the 200 block of Commercial Street between Beckwith Theatre, the post office and Dowagiac District Library.

“We have quite a variety. We have sun lovers and shade plants, all the way from black eyed Susan’s, Shasta daisies, sun drops, lemon bombs, hostas,” said Cathy Daniels, a member of the garden club. “We have smaller pots that will go for $1 and larger pots that will go for $4, or three for $10. They are hardy plants that have come from our own gardens and are planted in compost, so they have great nutrients with them.”

The plant sale will serve as a fundraiser to support community beautification activities such as seasonal planting of downtown planters and public gardens in the area.

“This fundraiser also supports a lot of the civic planting that we do around town. We clean and maintain a lot of public gardens around town,” Daniels said.” We also planted the crocuses on the corners downtown. We want to attract more people to come to our city.”

While the plant sale will be the star of the show this weekend, Daniels said the Town and Country Garden Club would welcome inquiries about the membership during the event.

The club is for those who have interest in flower arranging, environmental conservation, landscaping, horticulture, community service, gardening study, scholarships, youth activities and social activities, Daniels said. Anyone who shows interest in that is able to join the club, and the club is always welcoming new members.

“We plant seasonally. The downtown planters that are all along Front Street and Commercial Street,” Daniels said. “There’s 42 planters that we put together for the summer and in the fall we do mums. In the winter when the ground freezes we do winter decorations. … We have a lot of fun doing this. We have about 20 active members, and we’re always looking for more. Part of our goal is to share some of our education with the public on the garden club and to share our knowledge and love for gardening.”
