DOWAGIAC — It took just one breakaway for the Dowagiac soccer team to accomplish something it has not done in more than five years.

Chieftain senior Kellyn Daly took advantage of a defensive breakdown by visiting Edwardsburg to score the lone goal in Dowagiac’s 1-0 win over the Eddies in Wolverine Conference play Monday night.

Daly and Dowagiac had never defeated Edwardsburg in her career.

She hauled in a through pass and was off to the races toward the Edwardsburg goal as the final minutes ticked off the clock.

As an Eddie defender closed in, Daly prepared for contact which never came and she cleanly beat the Edwardsburg goalkeeper with 5:12 remaining in the match.

It was also the first win in Wolverine Conference play for Dowagiac this season, while the Eddies remain winless in league play.

“There was just a natural opening and Kenya Lee fed me the ball,” Daly said. “I saw the other girl coming and I thought I was going to get taken out, but I didn’t, and I used all my might to kick it in.”

While Daly was the offensive star of the match, it was the Chieftain defense that kept Edwardsburg from scoring.

“We are learning,” said Dowagiac coach Chad Davis. “We got our keeper back, Jenna (Davis) and that allowed Khloie (Goins) to come out and play some defense for us. We just have a nice rotation. They know how to slide over and cover for each other and that was the difference. We played for each other for tonight.”

Dowagiac finished with eight shots on goal, while Jenna Davis stopped 18 shots in her return between the pipes.
