NILES — Niles and Brandywine both came away with championships of tournaments they hosted Saturday.

The Vikings won its annual doubles tournament with 12 points. Paw Paw was second with nine, and Kalamazoo Central third with six points.

Meanwhile, across town at Plym Park, the Bobcats were blowing away the field.

Brandywine won with 32 points, while Bronson was second with 20, and Galesburg-Augusta third with 16.

South Haven Washington finished with nine points.

With the SMAC Conference tournament on Saturday and the MHSAA regionals at Three Rivers on May 16, Jill Weber’s team is gearing up for the postseason.

She was also thankful to get some tennis in after the weather has played havoc with the Vikings’ schedule.

‘We had a great day of tennis,” Weber said. The weather was perfect. We have had a lot of cancellations due to rain, so this was great for us to get on the court again and compete.”

Weber said she could see her team improve with each match on Saturday.

“By the third round for our team, I saw so much progress in one day,” she said. Which is great as we head to regionals in 12 days.”

Weather permitting, Niles will have a busy week leading up to the SMAC tournament on Saturday.

The Vikings host three consecutive home matches against non-league opponents beginning with Sturgis at 4 p.m. today.

Niles hosts Three Rivers on Tuesday and Edwardsburg on Thursday.

The Bobcats swept all eight flight championships on Saturday to cruise to the victory.

Veteran Brandywine coach Joe Marazita was also pleased with the weather conditions.

“Just a total team effort as all eight flights were on top of their games,” he said. “Our No. 1 and No. 2 doubles teams did not lose a game the entire tournament. I hope the weather improves so the team can continue to improve before regionals.”

The Bobcats host Dowagiac today in a non-conference match before traveling to Bronson on Tuesday.

The BCS Athletic Conference tournament is being hosted by Berrien Springs beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday.
