DOWAGIAC — The Dowagiac tennis team faced a tall task in hosting Edwardsburg in a Wolverine Conference match at the Dowagiac Middle School courts Wednesday.

The Eddies had a lot more experience than the youthful Chieftains, and it showed as Edwardsburg blanked Dowagiac 8-0, losing just a couple of games in the process.

But despite the loss, first-year Dowagiac coach Tammi Spivey was upbeat about the progress the Chieftains have made.

“The tennis team is coming along great,” she said. “Each player brings their commitment and strengths to the team, whether it is during practice or a match. They all have great communication with each other and will offer tips or suggestions to help one another improve their techniques.”

Edwardsburg did not drop a single game in sweeping the singles flights with Annika Smith, Leah Hosang, Ashley Smith and Claire Bartz.

Dowagiac was able to pick up a couple of games in the doubles flights.

McKenie Janssen and Isabella Ruiz lost to Elizabeth and Margaret Brown 6-0 and 6-1 at No. 2 doubles, while Gabbi Munson and Lily Hiler fell to Channing Green and Serena Reams 6-2 and 6-0 at No. 3 doubles.

“They are a great group of ladies, and I am proud of each and every one and hopeful to keep improving throughout this season,” Spivey said. “A wise person once told me there are wins and learning experiences. With consistency, determination and hard work, we can strive for more success during our tennis matches.”

Dowagiac is back on the court today as it travels to Coloma for a non-conference match.
