DOWAGIAC — It was night and day for host Dowagiac and Edwardsburg baseball teams as it split a pair of Wolverine Conference games at Rotary Park Tuesday.
The first game was a slugfest with the Chieftains rallying for a 13-8 victory, while the nightcap was a pitcher’s duel, which the Eddies won 2-0.
Dowagiac (4-6) used a seven-run bottom half of the fourth inning to erase Edwardsburg’s 7-3 lead.
The Eddies had broken a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth with four runs of their own.
But in the bottom of the fourth, back-to-back singles by Cole Weller and Tyler Huston got the Chieftains rolling.
Edwardsburg followed with an error to load the bases for Andrew McIntosh who delivered a two-run single to right field.
Back-to-back walks by the Eddies drove in the third run of the inning for Dowagiac as the Chieftains cut the lead to 7-6.
McIntosh would score on a wild pitch to tie the game before Hunter Brackensick singled home Deshawn Brookins to give Dowagiac an 8-7 lead with no outs.
Edwardsburg sandwiched a pair of strikeouts with an error that allowed the Chieftains to make it 9-7.
Brackensick would cap the scoring as the Chieftains took a 10-7 lead to the fifth.
The Eddies would make it 10-8 with a run in the top of the sixth, but Dowagiac answered with three more in the bottom half of the inning to complete the scoring.
A.J. Kidd would pick up the win as Dowagiac would take the lead before he was relieved by Brackensick in the fifth inning. Brackensick is credited with a save.
Offensively for the Chieftains, Brooks and Brackensick both finished with two hits. Cody Dorman doubled.
Edwardsburg was led by Colby Sidenbender, Caden Goggins, Connor Ostrander and Jonah Sibley, all of whom had a pair of hits. Sibley singled and doubled for the Eddies and drove in four runs in the contest.
Travis Straughn took the loss for Edwardsburg, which is now 8-2.
In the nightcap, both pitching staffs tossed three-hitters.
Brayden Burgess got the win for the Eddies as he worked five innings and struck out seven with just one walk.
Sibley pitched the final two innings and did not allow a run while striking out four.
Deshawn Brooks was equally as impressive as he pitched six innings, allowing two runs on three hits with five strikeouts.
Brackensick worked the seventh inning for the Chieftains.
Edwardsburg scored both of their runs in the sixth inning as a walk, singles by Mac Gaideski and Connor Nelson were aided by a sacrifice bunt by Bryce Blue.
Nelson’s two-run single proved to be the difference in the contest.
Brooks, Dorman and Luke Staten collected the three hits for the Chieftains in the nightcap.
Sibley, Gaideski and Nelson had the three hits for the Eddies.
Dowagiac is back in action on Friday as it hits the road for Plainwell and another Wolverine Conference doubleheader scheduled to begin at 4 p.m.
