BUCHANAN — Jacob Hoover pitched five innings of no-hit baseball to help host Buchanan sweep Comstock in its BSC Red Division opener Tuesday afternoon.

Hoover ended up sharing a no-hitter with Aiden Kile and Gannon Kutemeier as the Bucks took the opening game 6-1.

Buchanan completed the sweep with a 7-0 win in the nightcap.

Hoover struck out eight while Kutemeier fanned three Colts.

The Bucks (6-0, 2-0 Red Division) had 10 hits in the first game, led by Dedrick Adkerson, who was 3-for-4 with a double.

Buchanan also got doubles from Hoover, Sam Riley, Brandon Rogers and Brad VanOverberghe.

In the nightcap, VanOverberghe turned in another dominating performance as he tossed a one-hitter with seven strikeouts and no walks.

“We had a great outing from pitcher Jacob Hoover, and our bats are getting stronger as we hit through our lineup,” said first-year coach Jim Brawley. “We had 10 hits, five of them extra base hits. Brad VanOverberghe pitched another great game, with multiple strikeouts and zero walks. Matthew Hoover continues to play well defensively for us.”

Buchanan scored seven runs on eight hits as Jacob Hoover, VanOverberghe and Cam Lorance each had two hits. VanOverberghe doubled and drove in a pair of runs. Hoover had three RBIs and Lorance a pair.

The Bucks will get their strongest test of the season to date as they travel to Stevensville today to face two-time defending state champion Lakeshore in a non-league doubleheader.

Brandywine baseball

The Bobcats opened up BCS Red Division action with 6-0 win over Bridgman Tuesday.

The second game of the doubleheader was deadlocked at 2-2 when the umpires stopped the game due to darkness.

A four-run fourth inning was the key to the shutout for the Bobcats.

Consecutive singles by Ty Mickiewicz, Cam Barrier and James Vaughn gave Brandywine a 2-0 lead.

Two outs later, Shane Brown tripled and scored on a single by Gabe Gouins.

Mickiewicz did the rest of the work as he tossed a three-hitter with five strikeouts.

Brandywine had 10 hits, led by Barrier who was 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Mickiewicz, Vaughn and Brown all finished with two hits. Brown also had two RBIs.

Brandywine is back in action today as it travels to New Buffalo.
