Chieftains go 0-5 on the weekend

DOWAGIAC — The Chieftain softball team was swept by South Haven Friday afternoon.

The Rams won 10-9 in the opening and 4-1 in the nightcap.

On Saturday, Dowagiac went 0-3 at its own Chieftain Invitational, falling to Kalamazoo Central (13-1), Hartford (12-8) and Watervliet (8-5).

The Chieftains are now 3-5 on the season.

In the first game against South Haven, Dowagiac led 8-2 before the Rams scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the bottom of the seventh to pull out the victory.

The Chieftains had 16 hits in the game, including three each from Maddie Stockwell and Jessie Hulett, who homered and drove in two runs.

Amiyah Smith and Madison Potter both had two doubles and drove in two runs.

Smith suffered the loss in relief of Hulett.

In the nightcap, Dowagiac was held to six hits.

Potter was 2-for-3.

Sierra Carpenter took the loss.

Against Kalamazoo Central, Taylor Pye and Hulett had the lone hits for Dowagiac.

Hulett suffered the loss.

The Chieftains managed eight nits against Hartford, led by Smith, who was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Hulett tripled and drove in a run for Dowagiac.

Sarah Allen took the loss in relief of Carpenter.

Dowagiac had 12 hits against Watervliet, but could not score enough runs for a win.

Hulett was 3-for-4 with an RBI. Calley Ruff was also 3-for-4.

Smith and Carpenter were both 2-for-4 with a double. Smith drove a run and Carpenter drove in a pair of runs.
