BUCHANAN — A Buchanan business is inviting people to share their talents in an open mic night next week.

Union Coffee House & Cafe will host its third The U’s Got Talent open mic night from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday, March 27 at the business, 115 E. Front St. Former coffee shop employee Megan Goodrich will help to host the event. The event is free and open to the public.

Business owner Molly Thornton said that, so far, the talent has been widespread.

Acts have ranged from acoustic singing and acoustic instruments, magicians, comedians and poets, to name a few. The event has also drawn people of all ages to participate.

“I was really impressed with the variety we got on the first night,” Thornton said. “Our first night was jam-packed and we had all 10 slots filled. It had a really nice vibe, and it was really exciting.”

Thornton welcomed people interested in sharing their talents with the community to attend. She said the only guideline is that performances must be family friendly.

“It’s a really great and comfortable space for people that are putting themselves out there to go up and show us their talents,” Thornton said. “It has been well received so far.”

During the performance, the business’ kitchen will be open to serve up a variety of menu items from soup and sandwiches to salads, pastries, and coffee.

Through the experience, Thornton said she believes some community members have had the opportunity to share with the community.

“We want people to express themselves freely and that’s the whole idea is that it is not limited to one act or music,” Thornton said. “Some of the poetry has been very beautiful, and [it’s] really nice to see people who might be more of an introvert but want to share have that opportunity.”

Thornton said the best part is seeing people take a chance on sharing their talent and then being well received by their community. After sharing their talent, Thornton said the crowds have cheered them on and encouraged them, helping their nerves to melt away.

“Just to see people, especially the young people and have the crowd smile and clap for them, it’s just nice to see that and provide a space for it,” Thornton said.

“We want people to come down and show us their wow factor,” Thornton said. “If you don’t have a wow factor, you can come down and be wowed.”
