Kay Welsh volunteers at the gift shop at Lakeland Hospital in Niles.
How long have you volunteered at Lakeland?
Over 20 years.
Where do you volunteer?
In the gift shop.
How did you start volunteering at Lakeland?
I retired from Buchanan Schools as a secretary, and I definitely planned that when I retired, I would volunteer at the hospital. I was born here.
Why do you continue to volunteer?
I enjoy it. I enjoy being around people, and I think people who are busy volunteering are happy people.
Why do you think it’s important for people to be volunteering their time in their community?
I think we need to give back to others. I really do.
What have been some of your most rewarding experiences while volunteering at Lakeland?
Just being able to help people when they come in and they’re maybe not decided on what they might like, and being able to show them the different things we have. And to be pleasant to them and make their day a good day.
