PAQUETTE: An update from the Capitol
Published 9:23 am Monday, March 4, 2019
It is great to touch base with you again and provide you with a quick update about how things are going at the Capitol. I have a deep reverence for our representative form of government and have been learning more about civics than I could have ever done in my own classroom. The process for creating effective legislation requires a lot of work and conversations with stakeholders. I am finally getting the hang of this process as a first term legislator.
What brings me to an even deeper respect for our democratic republic however, is interacting with the other 109 representatives in the Michigan House. Every representative in the House serves around 90,000 citizens and they all bring varying backgrounds from across the state. Learning about everyone’s district and their personal story is fascinating. It makes for vigorous discussion and healthy dialogue concerning what is best for Michigan.
Much of the discussion currently revolves around auto insurance reform, which is something that affects every driver in Michigan. I believe wholeheartedly that relief is possible during this legislative session. Many individuals elected to serve this term were elected due to their desire to effect real reform.
Being on the border with Indiana, we all know family and friends who pay significantly less for auto insurance, and I have heard directly from many of you about how you would like to see real change. Auto insurance should never be a budget buster for southwest Michigan families. It is frustrating that auto insurance reform has been voted down so many times in the past, but I believe there are now leaders in place who are seeking to bring everyone to the table and provide real relief for citizens.
The Subcommittee on Auto Insurance Reform wants to bring you to the table as well. Please go to reducemiratesnow.com so you can share your stories and your ideas for reform. Now is the time to make change happen.
Again, please do not hesitate to reach out to my office and get an inside scoop on how reform is progressing. We look forward to speaking with you and facilitating your needs as we serve the 78th District.
Brad Paquette R, represents the 78th District, which covers Berrien county.
